In addition to the traditional psychological skills training, the newer cognitive awareness approaches have shown promising results in relation to performance enhancement. Thus, instead of trying to change the performance related thoughts and feelings, shifting attention has shown to be more effective. Furthermore, more recent acceptance and commitment based approaches have suggested that maladaptive thoughts and feelings are natural part of being an athlete, and they should be accepted instead of rejection. That way athletes would be more able tole mindfully present in the moment and shift their attention to relevant cues. A systematic review (see the link below) has suggested that these approaches really work, but they lack of consistent scientific evidence. Therefore, it would be important to focus on conducting scientifically sound research within this area! And that is something I will be focusing on my future research!
